New Generation

Our increasingly-electrified world is creating the need for additional power generation to meet customer demand.

The John W. Turk, Jr. Power Plant proposed for Southwest Arkansas will use high efficiency ultra-supercritical generation technology to provide baseload power, 24 hours a day, to customers of our SWEPCO subsidiary in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. This approach allows AEP to generate more power with less coal, a much more environmentally-friendly solution.

AEP is also diversifying its fuel mix with the acquisition and construction of new natural gas-fired generation units, including the Harry D. Mattison Plant (completed in 2007) and the Dresden Plant (currently under construction).

AEP owns wind generation projects like the ones at Trent Mesa and Desert Sky. The company also purchases wind power through long-term contracts with other generators to serve the needs of our customers for renewable energy.

Ultra-supercritical generation uses less coal and helps reduce emissions.
