AEP is a driving force behind the success of the hydrogen revolution. Our 11-state service territory is home to three of the seven hydrogen hubs selected by the U.S. Department of Energy. These hubs will play a critical role in developing and deploying hydrogen technologies, creating jobs, and driving economic growth. Our abundant renewable energy and natural gas supply will drive down the cost of hydrogen and make it a more competitive energy source. There is also strong infrastructure in place, including a network of pipelines and storage facilities, that can be used to transport and store hydrogen.
- The Appalachian hub (Ohio & West Virginia)
- Energy investors recognize the profitability potential of Ohio's shale plays. Ohio sits atop much of the Utica and Marcellus shale formations that contribute 85 percent of U.S. shale gas production growth since 2011. These shale plays contain large amounts of natural gas, natural gas liquids and crude oils. Ohio's access to plentiful and low-cost feedstock, combined with its proximity to end markets, make the state attractive for midstream and downstream investments.
- The Gulf Coast hub (Texas)
- The Midwest hub (Indiana and Michigan)
