For more than six decades, American Electric Power has cared for an impressive 60,000 acres of land known as ReCreation Land across three counties in eastern Ohio, offering a haven for outdoor enthusiasts who love camping, fishing, hiking and canoeing.

More than six years ago, the State of Ohio agreed to purchase thousands of acres from AEP, creating a partnership that ensures the continuation of environmental stewardship that has been in place since AEP began reclaiming what was once mined land back in 1947. AEP’s commitment to maintaining the land has made it a treasured spot for locals and visitors.

In 2018, AEP transferred the first 13,000 acres to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, which has since designated much of it as Jesse Owens State Park and Wildlife Area. Since then, the entire 60,000 acres transitioned to ODNR. Now recognized as the Appalachian Hills Wildlife Area, the property spans parts of Morgan, Muskingum and Noble counties.

Today, ODNR actively maintains these natural sources while improving recreational areas. This region represents 10% of all public property managed by ODNR. As Wildlife Officer Nathan West highlighted, AEP’s efforts in habitat creation and replanting have been instrumental in transforming the land.

ODNR is building on AEP’s legacy by upgrading campgrounds, improving access points for boating and developing new facilities, such as a nature center.

This partnership exemplifies a commitment to preserving Ohio’s natural beauty for generations to come.

The giant bucket from Big Muskie, the largest coal dragline ever constructed, is the anchor attraction at Miner's Memorial Park in McConnelsville, Ohio, part of ODNR's Jesse Owens State Park.
